The past week or 2 we have enjoyed walking up to the beautiful lush green pastures and the jungle that has come alive with vibrant foilage. The time to replant your gardens and touch up the rounds around your home has arrived here in Nosara, Costa Rica. We are all preparing and touching up our drains and areas around the home in order to prepare for the annual rains of the Guanacaste Region.
Nosara is one of those unique locations where the river crests and the small pueblo town struggles with flooding. It is not a daily thing but it does occur a few times per year when the weather begins to change and we get deep into the heavy winter rains.
Our average rainfall can range from 175 inches per year to over 200 in a wet year. In 2009 and 2010 we received a large amount of rainfall touching the 200 mark but this year the rains have come later and have not been as intense, hoping for a moderate rainy season this year.
With that comes some of the great adventures that this area can offer. Some of the areas most fantastic hiking you can imagine. We highly recommend you go with a local guide so you do not get lost. Last season my brother and I, along with a good local friend headed out on some adventures. We enjoyed a nice 2 week period in October with sunny skies and great weather providing us an opportunity to jump in the truck and drive out into the surrounding hills in search of waterfalls and adventure with unforgetable scenery.
We headed out on the north side of the river off into the mountains heading toward Santa Cruz. This took us up into the mountains giving us views overlooking all of Ostional, Nosara Valley and out to the bay of Guiones and Playa Pelada. Truly an amazing view to enjoy spanning almost our entire community. As we headed up deeper into the mountains, we found properties growing in size. Up here you rarely find small parcels of land. Almost everything here is in the hectare range in terms of the size of the land. The average farm in these regions range from 50-80 hectares or 123 acres – 197 acres (small farm) to well over 250 hectares or 617 acres roughly. This is a largely untouched region with steep land but many fantastic hilltop and ocean views set in some of the most serene jungle views. You truly feel like you are part of nature. The valleys here in these areas produce some of the most beautiful getaway spots you can imagine and virtually untouched.
These areas are some of our highlights during the rainy season, as it gives us the opportunity to get back and enjoy the lush jungle and wild areas of Costa Rica, that originally drew us here to this beautiful tropical environment. I can remember when my father first began speaking to us about heading to central America and saying we could live in the jungle and be right at the beach, my brothers and I were all imagining monkeys hanging from the trees, wild animals everywhere and snakes on vines (kind of like what we had seen in the movies). All of this along with great surf! I was hooked immediately.
Well a lot of this can be found just minutes out of Nosara. A short drive out into the mountains you can find all sorts of animals from deer to mountain lions. So be careful! But the true beauty of this place lies in the natural areas off in the mountain jungles and the hideen and excluded beaches along the rugged coast.
If your looking for a beautiful place to make a new start or just wanting to get back to a tranquil life Costa Rica is the place to be. Great surf, beautiful countryside and all the important necessities for you to enjoy life. So come on down and check out Nosara and our hidden paradise today and see what we have all be talking about!
